Lucie Kubínová: The first goal was motivating for us

28. 6. 2018 | David Sokol
The first ever U20 women´s game at the Junior World Cup pitted the host Czech Republic and Great Britain against each other. The Czechs were dominant from the game´s beginning, didn´t let the Brits play with the ball, and with ease won 7-0. After her three-assist performance, Czech forward Lucie Kubínová spoke about the game.

Lucie, you had the British team back on their heels right from the beginning, but weren´t able to score right away. What was missing?
There was a lack of finish around the net. We were playing with the ball instead of shooting. We were playing right into their hands.

You were able to score shorthanded. Is that something you work on, offence while shorthanded?
We work on everything we can (smile). But we practice that over and over again, so I think it shows during the games.

After the first goal you really took control of the game, especially with your great tactical awareness...
We had to score first - we knew that would get us going. Then we started playing the way we were supposed to and it worked out well, so we´re happy about that.

Did you let up at all at the end? You had a big lead.
No, definitely not. We were still giving the maximum we could. We play until the game ends, no matter what the score is.

Was there anything special you worked on leading up to today´s game?
We prepared the same way we do before every game. We were talking about tactics, but there wasn´t anything special (smile).

Did you have trouble with the tough play of the British team?
Not really, we stayed calm. We went to the rink with the goal to win, and we made it happen.

You contributed with three assists this game. Is that your style of play, to distribute the ball to your teammates?
Yes (smile). I´m really glad I was able to keep passing to the girls, and we play together very well.

It was the very first game of the championship. Was it a chance for you to test the tournament and opponents?
I´ve been to the world championship before, so I´m used to it. In addition, I know how the British play, so it wasn´t really anything new to me.

How was the preparation for this tournament going, in recent weeks and months?
The greatest role were playing probably the camps, we had plenty of them, and on them we were learning how to play together with the girls. The preparation was really good.
