Swiss start strong vs Poland

28. 6. 2018 | Derek O´Brien
The Zlín part of the Junior Under 16 Championship kicked off the first Group B game between Poland and Switzerland. In front of their enthusiastic supporters, the Swiss confronted Poland and won convincingly 6-1.

The game started very cautiously, with neither team wanting to make the first mistake. Over time, though, the Swiss began to take control and started pressuring in the Polish zone, with Jannik Lüthi finally scoring the first goal on Fabrice Feus in the 10th minute. The Swiss continued to exert pressure and soon Manuel Mballa increased the lead to 2-0. The Poles managed to get one back just 15 seconds before the end of the first period coutesy of Mateusz Filipowicz.

The Swiss exploded out of the gate to start the second period and immediately restored their two-goal lead. Mballa was left alone in front of the net and scored easily. A moment later, David Kapanek made it 4-1. In the middle of the second period, the Poles had a great opportunity to reduce the deficit again when Marlon Wróbel got in behind the Swiss defence and ran straight in on the goalie, but his shot hit the crossbar behind Lucas Jörg.

Nothing changed in the third period, as the Swiss remained in control with goals from Til Bucher and Mballa, completing his hat-trick. Adriano Frankiewicz got a late chance for Poland, but he could not score as everything went Switzerlands way in the first game for both teams.

Reactions

Coach of Poland: It was the first ball hockey game for us because we are a purely ice hockey team. It´s something new to us; a kind of summer diversion. It´s mainly fun for the boys.

Coach of Switzerland : We dominated the game from the beginning; we started it well. But I believe we will show even more here, perhaps even in the evening against the Czech Republic. We are very happy to win our first game of the tournament, and we love listening to our anthem.
